The purpose of the Workshop is to explore the issue of time and time frames for sustainability. Knowing that sustainability involves interacting systems (e.g., societies, business, and biological systems, etc.) each of which operates with its own set of multiple time scales (e.g., millennia, centuries, years, seasons, quarters, etc.), the goal of the workshop is to bring some light to this complex issue. The Workshop is, therefore, devoted to exploring the following questions which all participants will be expected to address in their lectures and discussions:
- What are the systems for sustainability and their time frames?
- How does interaction across different time frames occur?
- How do institutions maintain focus over long time frames?
- What are the implications for policy and technology?
